Wellness-Spring was founded in 2011 by Edna Dimataga-Fernandez. Several life-changing experiences inspired her to start the company including her father’s death at the age of 47 due to a heart attack, her mother’s battle with breast cancer at the age of 56, and her own struggle with infertility. She gave birth to their first child, Dominic, on May 30, 1996. In 2002, she wanted to have another child, but was unable to conceive for the next 10 years. In February 2010, she found out that both of her fallopian tubes were blocked. Medical doctors advised that she go through invitro-fertilization since getting pregnant after age 35 is very slim. Considering her family’s health history, she did not want artificial hormones in her body so she refused invitro treatments. She decided to take the mattter into her own hands and did some research in alternative medicine.
Since the Fall of 2011, she incorporated alternative medicine, wellness practices and holistic methods in her lifestyle. For the last 4 years, she experienced painful periods which made it difficult for her to function, so she had acupuncture treatments and took Traditional Chinese Medicine. After her first treatment, the menstrual pain stopped. She also practiced yoga and meditation for the first time. During meditation, it was all about “quieting the mind”. She exercised and did something she enjoyed…she walked “up and down” a steep incline 4x a week.To relieve chronic pain in her back and shoulders, she had deep tissue massages every 3-4 weeks. She also incorporated a healthier diet in her lifestyle. She got pregnant in the Spring of 2012 at the age of 39. She gave birth to their 2nd child, Ella Eve Niña Fernandez, on December 19, 2012, just 6 days before Christmas. Ella is the best Christmas gift they have ever received.
She speaks to women about the importance of using organic skincare and paraben-free mineral make-up. What we put on our skin is absorbed by the body. Unfortunately, many women are not aware that majority of the cosmetics available in the market are made of toxic ingredients, and are very bad for our health. She also founded THE WELLNESS INSTITUTE, a provider of holistic wellness plans, wellness education, and wellness programs for businesses and organizations.
Together with her husband, Phil Fernandez, they have launched a wellness project called The Grape Seed which is geared towards women who struggle with infertility. Phil is a professional portrait and fashion photographer. He also founded Fernandez Bros Experience, a professional videography company based in Los Angeles. Phil serves as Wellness-Spring’s Creative Director.
